Last week Mrs. Bolton read a book, Chrysanthemum, to the class and talked about how to care for one another with kind words. She also explained a strategy for how to work though a conflict with another student. The second graders have been practicing this strategy using this poster in our classroom. Sometimes we act out a situation that could happen and practice what we would say. For example, "I feel upset when you say you don't want to play with me because it makes me feel lonely and I want you to let me play." When issues do come up in the classroom, students use the poster, with guidance, to help work through the situation. The class has reported successes when using this new conflict resolution strategy. You could practice at home too, and let me know if it is helpful. As we continue to learn strategies to help manage feelings and friendships, students will become more independent and confident.
